Stella suppressed her flaming frustration at the insistence. Her neck burned with tension. This was absurd to say the least.
“I can assure you, whatever your rules are, we’ll obey them,” Michael pushed.
Exhaustion blazed through his tired eyes, and she could scarcely stand another bout of argument. She bowed her head, closed her eyes, and prayed a quick prayer for God to open the way for them.
“They can have water, right?”
Stella was surprised to hear the driver chime in. She offered him a grateful smile. Of course, he could have helped better earlier had he let them out of his car faster.
“Says who?” The thin man bent and peered.
“Says I.” A firm female voice, too familiar to Stella’s mind, said from outside the passenger window.
The man straightened and simply walked away without further protest, his pen dangling by extended black rope from the clipboard he held. But Stella’s blood raced in her veins as she climbed out of the vehicle after Michael, around the car and toward the voice.
She gasped, collapsed to her knees on dusty tar, and cried out for joy that welled from deep within. “Sharon!”
Sharon came to her knees as well, trembling, as both women rammed into each other’s arms and wept for what felt like forever—the first emotional response Stella saw Sharon show in a decade.
When the tears ceased, they parted, and Stella’s gaze dropped to a cross pendant stuck by sweat on Sharon’s neck. She looked into her eyes then back to her neck and blinked.
Sharon nodded tearfully. Was the sealed curtain truly slipping? Stella gaped in pleasant shock. They hugged again, and this time, Stella’s sobs were louder than Sharon’s. She felt numbed with gratitude to God, for saving Sharon in every conceivable way.
Sharon pulled them apart slightly, looked up at Michael who stood silently behind Stella. “I assume he’s with you?”
Stella turned and rose to her feet. “Yes. He is.”
Sharon held out a stabilizing hand, and she took it.
“Ms. Parsons, we need your help. Someone won’t allow her kid to be sutured. He’s bleeding from an earlier fall at the boundary marker, and we can’t hold him down. They say you’re good with kids. Can you help?” A young, male volunteer about Sharon’s age extended a rushed hand to Sharon. But she exhibited more maturity than Stella had seen her do in her seventeen years as she smiled genuinely but maintained calm.
Her eighteenth birthday was less than two weeks away, and God had answered Stella’s prayer before then. She couldn’t wait to hear how Sharon’s conversion happened.
“I’ll be glad to, Trevor. Give me a minute or two. I need time with family.”
The volunteer with curly black hair curiously eyed both Stella and Michael and left. Clearly, Sharon had some sort of authority here. Stella swallowed back more tears as pride over seeing her daughter taking care of people threatened to suffocate her.
“Michael, meet my daughter, Sharon.” Somehow, Stella managed to start the introductions. She choked back the lump in her throat and pushed out the rest.
